Articles & Ideas

Resources that discuss podcasting as an education and communication tool

Inspirational Examples:

Resource Links

Hardware for Podcasting

  • iKey Plus - Just add a portable USB storage device (hard drive, iPod, etc) and you've got an audio recorder
  • Pocasting "Kit" - A mic, a mixer, headphones and software
  • M-Audio Podcasting Factory - Like the above; a complete turnkey hardware/software solution

Audio Interfaces - Allow you to attach regular mics to your computer

  • iMic - Not a mic per se, but rather an "external sound card" USB device that allows you to plug nearly any microphone into your computer (~ $30)
  • M-Audio Fast Track USB - More flexible and better quality than the iMic above, an external USB sound card (~ $130)
  • M-Audio FireWire 410 - Outstanding quality audio interface (~$400)

Standard (not USB) Microphones, Wired and Wireless

Location Recorders

  • iTalk Pro - This is cool; a small mic that plugs into the bottom of your iPod (iPod Video or iPod Nano) and turns it into a stereo recorder. Next time you sync your iPod to your computer, your Mp3 files transfer! (~ $45)
  • M-Audio Microtrack - A high-quality digital audio recorder (~ $500)
  • Samson H-4 Handy Digital Recorder - A less expensive high-quality digital audio recorder (~ $260)
  • iRiver Mp3 Players - iRiver makes Mp3 players that also feature voice recording (starting at ~$70)

Software for Recording & Mixing Podcasts

Various Utilities useful for Podcasting

Soundflower - Soundflower is a free Mac OS X system extension that allows applications to pass audio to other applications. Useful when trying to get more than one audio source to a recording application.

Line In - A useful Mac OS X utility that helps you use the "line in" (microphone) jack on your computer for any audio input (think tape decks, record turntables, etc)

Sound Source - A Mac OS X menu item that allows you to easily change the audio input on your computer.

Feedburner - Feedburner takes your "regular" RSS feed and passes it through their service, allowing you to count subscribers, item downloads and a number of other useful, helpful things.

LibSyn - LibSyn is an inexpensive hosting solution for podcasts; unlimited bandwidth for 5 bucks a month

Vodcaster - A neat utility that does a great job of creating RSS/XML files for your podcast "feeds"

Levelator - Amazing; Free software that runs on Windows or OS X (universal binary) that adjusts the audio levels within your podcast or other audio file for variations in levels.

Music for your Podcasts:

Freeplay Music - Royalty-free music that you can use in your Podcasts

Podsafe Audio - Music created specifically for use in Podcasts

Podsafe Music Network - More established than the above resource, another place where you can download good music created specifically for use in Podcasts or other shared media.

Freesound - An "open-source" style resource for free music

How To and Tips Websites :

Recording Sound on your Computer - A very good, brief overview of how to record sound of all sorts on your computer. If you've never done it before, this is a good place to start for information, especially for Windows users.

    • Part 1 - Hooking up Hardware (Microphones, Tape Decks, Etc)
    • Part 2 - Figuring out software

PC Recording - A nice tutorial site about how to record any audio to your computer.

Sound in the Story - A really fine long-ish (21 pages) PDF on the art of location recording, mostly from the creative standpoint (what to do as opposed to "how" to do it)

Podcast Directories:

Podcast Alley - One of the oldest podcasting directories

Podcast Net - Another large directory of podcasts

IndiePodder - An "independent" podcast directory (not that the others aren't, but...)
